Our Journey
We launched Data For India nearly two years ago to make India's data landscape more accessible, understandable, and useful. Since then, we have published 70 in-depth analyses featuring 329 interactive charts, drawn from 37 datasets.
In November 2024, we introduced "The Big Shift" - our weekly subscriber-only newsletter on India's long-term transformation through the lens of data, written by our founder, Rukmini S.
As the volume of work increased on the Data For India platform, it became more challenging for readers to discover what they were looking for and share relevant research and insights with others. Meanwhile, new visitors to the platform often didn't know where to begin.
Last year for the first time, we reached out to you - our readers - to understand your experience with Data For India. Your feedback on how you engage with the platform and what more you wished it could do helped shape our thinking on improvements.
Today, we are excited to share the biggest update to Data For India since its launch: a significant redesign focused on making it easier than ever to discover, explore, and understand India through data.
What's New
This redesign focuses on three core improvements of the Data For India platform: better discovery, clearer organisation, and enhanced utility.
Better discovery
Powerful new search: The search experience is now front and centre as you land on the platform. Our new search better understands what you are looking for, surfacing our most relevant analyses, research and topics for you, instantly.

Smarter navigation: We have reimagined the navigation experience to help you explore our work more effectively. Each of the eight key socio-economic themes now includes a clear explanation for it and lists the specific topics covered within it.

Focussed newsletter experience: We have redesigned the newsletter experience to make it easier to find, explore, and subscribe to. A new newsletter section now clearly showcases our offering, so you always know what you are signing up for. Browse past editions, navigate to related analyses, and subscribe with ease.

Clearer organisation
Enhanced topic structure: We have reorganised our work into comprehensive themes and topics. Each piece on the platform now shows the topics covered under it as tags, and each topic page can be easily explored to find related pieces.

Complete topic catalogue: At the bottom of our home page, you will also find a complete list of every topic we cover. Each topic links to everything we have published on it.

Enhanced utility
Improved reading experience: We have refined the reading experience with clean, spacious layouts throughout the platform. Whether you are on desktop or mobile, our research and analyses are now more comfortable to read across every device.
Richer data visualisations: We have overhauled our data visualisations to make them more accessible and easier to read. Charts are now larger, with improved typography and colour schemes that ensure visual clarity, whether you are reading on the platform or sharing them with others.

Seamless sharing and reuse: Download the visualisations as images, share them across your network or embed the interactive versions directly into your work. You can also access the underlying data directly and use it for your own work. All our work can be freely used, with proper attribution.

What Stays the Same
While much has changed in how you engage with the Data For India platform, our core commitment remains unchanged: providing rigorous and in-depth analyses to advance the understanding of India through data.
Thank You
This milestone would not have been possible without the efforts of Gulshan, Pragnya, Apoorv and Rukmini from the Data For India team. Special thanks to our design partners Tibba Design Studio who helped bring this vision to life.
And finally, thank you to you - our readers. Your curiosity and engagement with India's data continues to drive us forward.
We invite you to explore the redesigned platform and discover what's new. We would love to hear your thoughts on the redesign, and what you would like to see next. Write to us at info@dataforindia.com.
